This is to promote the practice of parentage verification and to reward the breeders that do so. If a breeder parentage verifies all the lambs they have entered into the sale, they will be permitted to bring a 5th parentage verified ram into the sale so long as it meets the criteria other sale Criteria. In order to have lamb’s parentage verified for the sale samples should be ordered and returned to Sheep Ireland this week to ensure results are available when the catalogue is being generated. In order to have a lamb parentage verified its sire and dam must also be genotyped. Breeders should take into account that stars may move between the point of collecting the sample and the day of the catalogue being printed due to additional data being collected, so where possible additional rams should be tested to give the best chance of having 5 rams that meet the criteria when required.
Breeders should also be aware if a lamb subsequently fails the parentage test and the correct parentage cannot be identified the animal will no longer qualify for the sale and the incorrect ancestry will be removed.
