When and Why to record lambs and ewe mature weights?

Breeders collects valuable performance information that is used in the Sheep Ireland genetic evaluations.

There are 5 key weights to be recorded:

  • birth weight,
  • 40-day weight,
  • 100-day weight (weaning),
  • 150-day weight (muscle and fat scanning)
  • and mature weight.

Using the LambPlus App is the simplest way of recording.

The ideal time to record ewe mature weight is when taking 100 day weights from lambs.  Record your ewe mature weights as they are being drafted through the race when recording your lambs weights.

Ewe mature weights contributes to maternal production and efficiency traits, increasing the accuracy of the replacement index in genetic evaluations.

Recording these important phenotype’s are vital for genetic evaluations to be accurately ran on animals participating in the LambPlus Programme.
